Promoting Lifelong Learning
Blue Valley Schools should embrace a mission to train the minds and improve the hearts of young people through language-focused teaching in the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.
The purpose of education is to inspire students to learn with depth and creativity and to propel them to be accomplished lifelong learners, innovators, thinkers and leaders.
Blue Valley is an accomplished school district, and yet, approximately half of our students read below grade level or at grade level with a need for remediation. Let's embrace a mission to provide all our students with a rich and challenging curriculum that mobilizes their minds and equips them to pursue their dreams and passions.
Please see the Key Issues page for several specific, actionable ideas that I propose to advance these ideas in the Blue Valley Schools.
In the 2020-21 school year, the Blue Valley Board of Education collectively failed in its response to Covid, resulting in continued uncertainty, haphazard decision-making and an educational product well below the high standards that our community expects. Importantly, the Board did not take a public vote on these matters, deferring all decision-making to an unelected committee.
Decisions around Covid (masks, vaccines, quarantines, etc.) are likely to arise again in the fall and winter of 2021. As a member of the Board, I will not hide my views nor shy away from public votes on such important matters of public interest.
Specifically, masks should not be mandated for students attending BV schools, nor should the BV schools gather any Covid vaccine information on students in the district. Additionally, hybrid learning should never again be inflicted on the students of Blue Valley. Remote learning should be reserved only for those who elect that mode of learning.
